The Fire is Breathing On Me Reviews
“One thing is clear…Mat Gould is a risk taker. The poems in this collection make you take stock of where you are and where you’ve been, offering a wayward glance into Gould’s emotional geography. Every poem is like a beating heart thrown against the wall of an all night gin joint, leaving behind small scraps of joy and making the best of a bad situation. Drink in every word as if it were your last drop of whiskey and worry about the hangover in the morning.” -John Dorsey, Author of TOMBSTONE FACTORY, Epic Rites Press, 2013. Mat Gould’s “The Fire is Breathing on Me” reads like the internal monologue of a long distance truck driver. Disjointed, reactive, chatty—and improbably lyrical, the first poem buckles you in like an uncertain hitch hiker, and the last one lets you off at your exit wondering, “Who was that man?” When you get somewhere, you should probably buy a lottery ticket, because something about your luck just changed. Wendy Ellis, Editor, Unshod Quills
Mat Gould's is a raspy southern voice with a sweet and restrained element of honey cough drop combined with beach-house hangover. You can feel his lack of regard for convention in these pieces, but at the same time, you feel Mat's great regard for classicism and gentle, unobtrusive wit. I wish more books of poems were less stylish and trendy and more down-home and easy on the eyes, if not sometimes a bit challenging, in a good way, to the thought process.
