When an acquaintance introduces him to God and invites him to a college youth group, the changes in his life are immense and unsettling. The most unsettling part is Jenny Clearwater, his boss's daughter. He can't deny his attraction, but she courts instead of dating, and courting seems all about keeping the Shawn Carpenters of the world away from the Jenny Clearwaters.Danger and heartache seem to come around every bend, from a cave trip gone wrong to a friendship that goes up in flames to an accusal of crime at work. Seems God has put events in motion to lead Shawn back into a life of community and growth, assuming, of course, they don't kill him first.Get set for this first book of the Christian series Boys of Summer, for teens and anyone else who appreciates the challenges of stepping into adulthood....

This book was a light read, meant more for teenagers (but I knew that going in). It was a okay written book, with interesting books, and a decent look at courtship. This book wasn't amazing, but it wan't bad either. Good if you are looking for a slower paced book.

This was a light read of young love and Christian valued. However, for me it was a bit too syrupy and too preachy.

I received this book as a First Reads WinnerI was completely swept up in this book. I honestly couldn't even tell you what the writing was like, I was so invested in the story and I was utterly moved. Knowing God is a blessing and there are always people who can quote scripture and just seem to get it and their relationship with God is strong and sure and I still struggle sometimes. With this book, Shawn is a new Christian and is learning about God and the bible and how to have a relationship with God and it is amazing to read. I loved this book. The relationships between all the characters make me yearn for that kind of closeness in my own Christian community. I had only two complaints about this book and they aren't really complaints. Seth and Shawn were extremely emotional towards each other all the time and I found it a little far fetched and all the conversations in the entire book were based on faith. I understand that this is a Christian story but I wish it could have shown some other sides to the characters. I am a strong Christian and every conversation I have does not include talking about God and my faith. Also, Seth's comment about not sleeping soundly because he thinks God wants to talk so he does prayer in the night if he can't sleep was beautiful. I found myself awake last night and I talked to God until I grew sleepy again, it was very peaceful and comforting.Overall, I enjoyed this book so much because of the emotion I felt while reading it. I have no idea if it was good writing because I read (and re-read books) based on how they made me feel. Can't wait to continue on with the Boys of Summer.

The writing was pretty good, but the story line and the development was outstanding. I really appreciated the fact that it is not only a clean story, but that the characters, both new believers and more mature, are proactively pursuing God and pursuing purity in their relationships. Shawn must make many decisions about providing for his family and letting his past be used for good. Jenny and her family must choose to accept someone who does not have the perfect Christian image from his childhood. And Seth, Julie and Violet play supporting rules of determining how to appropriate God's grace for the challenges that face their young adult hearts. One factual inconsistency was distracting. Shawn initially tells his friends and discusses with his mom that the tragic fire occurred 4 years prior, but for the remaining 75% of the book, it is listed as 6 years ago. Great read.

    * rating: 4,5The message of the book, about finding faith and developing relationship with God, and also importance of having real friends on whom you can lean on, was quite beautiful, but something in the writing style I just didn't liked...

It was a good story, but is was slow and not too exciting. Events seemed recurring at points, though I never got bored enough to put the book down.

I thought this was a romance book with a Christian back story. Its a Christian story with a little romance. I did like reading about Shawn growing in his faith though.

Not my favorite! I loved reading about how he turned his life around. However, the rest of the story was a flop. Not worth losing sleep over this book!

    Disappointing. Juvenile. Predictable. Flat.
