Yes it's a picture book but I'm still counting this toward my challenge because it's 176 pages, there's a lot of info in it and I did read it cover to cover. It's Disney it's art. What can I say? I love these books and will always buy the latest art of Disney books as soon as they come out! Format: book

An astounding collection of artwork and storyboards that contain a wealth of insight into the incredibly thorough process of computer animation. There's seriously so much packed into these pages. Some of the tidbits I enjoyed included a story beat from Aliens being inserted into the storyboard in honor of Sigourney Weaver, lines of text in lengthy posters decorating the aquarium simply being in Latin or deliberately misspelled, and random sticky notes saying "Do your job" over someone's work. Then of course, there is the classic attention to detail that Pixar is so famous for: the variations of displays for the Marine Life Institute logo on a truck, the countless designs for maps of the aquarium (including the parking lots that we never actually see), the thousands of fake signs created to make everything look realistic, the placement of different types of sea plants to emphasize the authenticity of the open ocean in contrast to the synthetic nature of the open ocean exhibit, the subtle working in of curvilinear shapes to enhance the emotional atmosphere of a scene, the absolutely jaw-dropping digital paintings of the main story beats that comprise the color schema of the entire film in the back of the book, everything is meticulously and lovingly designed. Finding Dory might not be the most groundbreaking Pixar film ever, but its eagerness to deal with complicated emotions, create a massive sense of scope and environment, and remain true to the spirit of Nemo while heading in a new direction is something to be commended. This book is amazing. It lets you experience everything the film has to offer, and then some, because some of the environments depicted in the paintings simply transport you into Pixar's aquatic universe, at peace with the terror and serenity of water. Fantastic, fantastic art. P.S. Some of the best artwork in the book is contributed by Ms. Rona Liu. Her work is truly outstanding, definitely keep an eye out for her pieces.

This was a very entertaining read. Filled with beautiful concept art, even for deleted scenes. Story boards and lots of background information. Should be in every Disney fan's collection.

Always fascinating to discover just how much forethought & attention to detail is involved in making animated films.

Review Taken from The Pewter WolfHighly anticipated sequel to Finding Nemo (one of my fave movies, FYI), Finding Dory is finally about to come out in the UK! And here, in The Art of Finding Dory, we see snippets of ideas and artwork that went into making the movie. From new characters and locations, from photographs and concept art to sculptures and sketches, this is an insight to how the movie was made. This is one side of how the movie was made, and it's the one I really enjoy. I always enjoy how people designed themes and who the get ideas/emotions over within a scene, and how they created new characters (I found the new characters Hank the octopus, Destiny the whale shark and Bailey the beluga whale so interesting and, without even seeing the movie yet, I know I will love these characters oh so much!) and locations. My advice to you guys is that if you are going to get this, get it after you watched the movie. There is a few hints towards how the movie ends. It doesn't go really into depth but if you dislike spoilers, I would say buy/read after watching the movie. But I really enjoyed reading this! And I shall be skimming this and The Art of Finding Nemo after I watch Finding Dory...

I may be an easy target for these "Art of" Pixar film editions but any lifelong student looking to expand their craft and find inspiration from the minds and work of the masters would do themselves a favor to pick each and every one of these up.I have been sorely disappointed that one of the most original studios of the last 20 years has decided to make such a heavy business of sequel development as of late but from a production development standpoint they have not let that keep them from doing what they do best in exploring and exploiting each and every physical and emotional story detail of what you see one the screen. The Art of Dory is filled with Storyboard sequences both from the film and deleted scenes along with designs, color scripts and other "art of" standards but the stand out for me is the art and examples on use of is space and shape language to help define moments of the character's experiences.Pretty good film. Great book.Highly recommend.

For those who have been steadfast in keeping up with the art books for recent Pixar films, this installment for "Finding Dory" is a breath of fresh air. After a stunningly disappointing release on "Inside Out", I was very skeptical of this book following the trend of little text and a lot of white space. Thankfully, "The Art of Finding Dory" is a pleasant surprise. While it doesn't have as much production content as the first film's art book, it's still a wealth of info that collectors and fans of the film will be satisfied with.

Finding Nemo is a lodestone of mine, so I was thrilled when Dory was finally announced. I was even more thrilled when I found out that one of the new characters was a whale shark - my all-time favorite fish and one of my favorite animals, period. This book had lots of storyboard and non-digital art for the film, which was fun. I deducted a star because there was not enough whale shark - so take my rating with a grain of salt!

I wish there was more commentary about the character design and production choices. Concept art is gorgeous and I like the that it contains the story boards with the deleted scenes.
