I was given a copy of this book for an honest review. In the second installment of the Undergrounders series, Embattlement, Ms. Hinkens has done it again! She has pulled so elements that make up a true Dystopian novel to create a world that the reader can easily be immersed into. Derry has now become the leader of her fellow surviving Undergrounders. This young woman has no idea if her brother, Owen, is still alive after leaving his body behind. However, she will not take any chances. Forming alliances with some of the most treacherous people, Derry is determined to once and for all face the heartless Doctor Lyong to hopefully save her brother and stop the inhuman experimentation and cloning the doctor performs on people. Ms. Hinkens has done an impeccable job in this second installment. Her writing flows smoothly to create a plot that is not only captivating, but one that is realistic. One of my favorite characters is, of course, Derry. I admire Derry's ability to lead, to think clearly under pressure, negotiate fairly, her honesty, and overall a great role model for many.I can't give enough praises to the author for developing such strong follow up to her first book. I highly recommend this read and her first (Immurement) to those who enjoy Dystopian novels with a splash of Science Fiction and a read that shows the grittiness of living in a post-apocalyptic world.

Owen was left behind to suffer at the hands of a twisted scientist. Derry and those who managed to escape the brutality of Dr. Lyong are now alone, outnumbered and in need of a new leader. Derry must step up, but the question of what has happened to her brother becomes an obsession that Derry MUST answer. To re-enter Craniopolis is a death mission, uneasy alliances must be made, and no one is sure who can be trusted. Will Derry find the strength she needs to conjure deals for support, warriors and take down both the monstrous madman, and save her brother? Caught up in her own personal drama between the pacifist Jakob and the warrior clone, Sven, Derry must keep her distance as her heart is pulled in opposite directions and the clock ticks down on any chance to find Owen alive. Derry will use any method necessary to save her brother, including using a pawn that may turn the tables of the power the doctor holds. But can the alliances she has made be trusted? Is she sending her “army” into the valley of death?Norma Hinkens has added fuel to the raging flames of her dystopian world where humans are turned into science experiments and warrior clones are mass-produced to overrun what is left of the world. EMBATTLEMENT is non-stop danger, action and unseen twists that explode off every page form start to finish. Chaotic, terrifying, bold and daring, follow Derry and the Undergrounders as they forge into the unknown with allies the once would have run in fear from. Trust and timing will all come down to one last chance to save humanity.Be prepared to be enveloped in a desolate, dystopian world where lives hang in the balance and one young woman will become the figurehead that either launch a victory or sink the hopes of the innocent victims.I received this copy from Norma Hinkens in exchange for my honest review.Trilogy: The Undergrounders - Book 2Publisher: Dunecadia Publishing; 1 edition (February 21, 2016)Publication Date: February 21, 2016Genre: YA DystopianPrint Length: 310 pagesAvailable from: Amazon For Reviews & More: http://tometender.blogspot.com

I think it was better than the first book, mainly because the main character Derry stopped being wishy-washy. I appreciate also that Derry makes up her mind early on about which of the two love interests she wants to be with. Everything was pretty straight forward with no mystery or unforeseen plot twists because Derry would literally think to herself that something would either pan out like A or B, and then things would play out like she thought they would. The writing was decent and had some overused phrases, but nothing too bad.

At the beginning of this second book in the Undergrounders series, I thought, uh oh, it's going to be same meat different gravy as the saying goes ( in the UK) but m glad to say it wasn't. Just enough description about the plot and places was given so I could imagine it in my minds eye, and the story did advance and take on newer senario's, which kept me enthralled and page turning to find out what happened. The story gave emotions of frustration, respect, jealousy, hatred and love and many more. Norma Hinkins talent in continuing this story, made me able to feel these emotions, which is hard to do, without totally encompassing you in their thoughts and defer away from the story. This book was action packed and constantly evolving. The characters were completely believable, as a consequence I had my own ideas of there features which enhanced the storyline. I Look forward to continuing with this series and interested in further novels by Norma Hinkins

WOW, Hold onto your seats! I only wish I had read book 1! I was spell bound with Derry Connelly taking over for her brother that she had to leave behind. I liked that this teenager and her rag tag bunch of survivors escaped Doctor Lyong's evil clutches, but no one knows if her brother is dead or alive. The plan to rescue the people still there falls apart when the Council is split over rumors that Owen is tied to Craniopolis and she's forced to find new recruits. I read so fast that I wasn't ready for book 2 to end and I MUST read book 3!

GoodThis is a second good book. It has a solid storyline and action all the way through. The character are likeable however it does lacks chemistry between the main characters. There isnt really any relationships going on, the off stare or hand hold but thats it. They are at war so obviously the characters dont have the time to build up romatic relationships. I felt the writing lacked emotion. Recommended read if you like action packed and strong female lead.

"Embattlement" the second novel in the gripping and mesmerizing "Undergrounders" series heats up when Derry, Trout, Sven take a humanitarian detour to Shoshane City, a community where a protective current impedes Hovermedes from snatching more victims. With the support of Jerome, the city's enigmatic leader they begin gathering recruits for their assault on Craniopolis only to be thwarted by an internal coup while making an unwelcome alliance with the Ghost and his band of Rogues. Norma Hinkens brings to life a tumultuous world after the earth's core overheats globally killing most of the population. Survivors struggle to stay alive underground as Hovermedes kidnap anyone caught above, flying them to Craniopolis where they're used in genetic cloning and other experimentation. In this plot she creates a dark, pervasive atmosphere of suspicion and uncertainty, heightening the tension and suspense as Derry faces conflict in a city that's wary of her plans and her leadership ability while she tries to thwart the deadly manipulation of a psychotic Rogue leader. This well-developed and fascinating story twists and turns as plans go awry, allegiances change, and tension mounts between Jakob and Sven, both who are in love with Derry. Torn by guilt over leaving her brother behind after the Undergrounders' last bittersweet victory against the madness of Doctor Lyong and his scientists Derry refuses to admit her feelings or confront a situation that could be spiraling out of control. Yet as events unfold the story builds quickly and smoothly to an explosive confrontation at the end, and a cliff-hanger that begs for another book.Norma Hinkens is a master at creating characters who are realistic and complex as they struggle against forces determined to annihilate them. Derry Connolly haunted by guilt struggles under the weight of responsibility that comes with leadership, knowing that she can give life and pardon a rogue like Rummy or be party to his execution. She's tough, resourceful and spirited, never letting her guard down even when faced with the Ghost's knife at her throat. Her greatest asset is Trout who's strong-willed, curious, but often guarded. His humorous banter often eases the tension when a situation gets rough or Derry's fortitude begins to buckle under pressure. In this story Derry yearns to further her relationship with the handsome, uncomplaining and battle-hardened clone Sven even knowing there's an expiry date on his life, but is considerate of Jakob's feelings, an heroic and kind Septite who's adverse to violence. Yet it's antagonists like the brutal and cold-heart of Blake, the threatening violence of the Ghost and the unrelenting fear and cruelty that Doctor Lyong and his Shutz Clones instill that lend a frightening chill to the drama.I loved "Embattlement" which gets more thrilling and captivating with every new challenge Derry faces. I rate it highly and am looking forward to reading the next book in this exceptional series.

As we delve back into the lives of Derry, Sven, Trout and Jakob in Embattlement we pick up where Immurement left off. When we left them last time Derry had to leave her brother Owen behind at Craniopolis she thought he was not going to make it and so did he. He sacrificed himself to save Derry and everyone else. But now they are rumors going around that Owen may still be alive and as long as there is a chance that he is alive; Derry will do whatever it takes to save him and bring him home. Beside someone has to stop the Sweepers from extracting everyone and using them in their experiments.Derry knows that she and the Undergrounders can’t go up against the Sweepers all by their selves. They will need help so the only choice she has is to team up with their enemies the rogues. So Derry sets out to find them and enlist their help. When she finds them she knows they need even more so they set out for Shoshane City to find more help.Upon reaching Shoshane City with help of some riders Derry realizes right away that the leader of Shoshane City Jerome has a lot of secrets and she is determined to find out what they are if she is ever going to trust him. But can she ever trust anyone again. Will she discover what Jerome is hiding? Will she ever be able to trust him? Can she trust him long enough to save her brother? Does she really have a choice at this point? On her quest to save her brother and anyone else at Craniopolis Derry and her friends run into more and more trouble. It seems to follow her around for some odd reason. She runs into some more bad people along the way but there is a mysterious person among the bad guys that has been helping people escape from all their attacks upon the Undergrounders. Who is this mysterious creature and why is he saving them? What is his purpose? What is in it for him or her in saving them?I love the world that the author has created in Embattlement and all the character as well. Norma Hinkens has created a world full of characters that jumps out and fills you with warmth among lots of other feelings. I couldn’t get enough of it and when I wasn’t reading it I was definitely thinking about it. I can’t wait for book 3 Judgement. I can’t wait to find out what Derry has in plan for us next. What will she do? Has she really saved anyone as of yet? What does Judgement have in store for us? What is waiting on the horizon for Derry and all of her friends in Judgement? If you haven’t read The Undergrounders then I highly recommend that you do it will blow you away. But I suggest that you check out the first book Immurement first and then go on to Embattlement so that you can understand more about what is going on.

The energy of the book is over the top and I got so caught up in the fight to unite the different factions that I just couldn't put it down. I love Derry's character and the hope she represents for the future. And I can see where it would be the younger generation who would take up the fight to rebuild the world. Can't wait to start next book.

This is a strong sequel with action that moves the story forward. My rating 4.25.Derry and a handful of undergrounders have escaped from the evil Dr. Lyong and the city of Craniopolis. Derry saw her brother, Owen, struck down and fall even as he facilitated the escape of their Hovermede. She believed he sacrificed himself for the mission but she is told that as the craft flew away, Owen was seen alive and captured by the Security Cyborgs.Derry is intent on rescuing Owen from Craniopolis, hopefully before Dr. Lyong uses his horrible synthesizer equipment to experiment on him like so many of the damaged humans abandoned within the city. Some of the Undergrounders are willing to support her but others vote not to be involved. Derry knows she will need huge reinforcements before attempting to reenter Craniopolis. She hopes to recruit the dangerous Rogues whose camp is beyond Shoshane City. She goes to the city first and discovers a community of survivors led by a strong leader, Jerome, who has his own secrets. These survivors live under the threat of the Sweepers from Craniopolis so Derry convinces them to join in the attack to wipe away the common enemy. One of Jerome’s conditions is that the deformed and damaged humans are rescued too.Convincing the brutal Rogues to cooperate is more dangerous and trickier. Derry is using Rummy, Blade’s brother, as a hostage for negotiation. They manage to capture Blade and then use both to obtain a meeting with the mysterious, dark Rogue leader known as The Ghost. Finally, a combined group proceed with the mission. Each step of the attack has its own risk and it will take a lot of coordination and a bit of luck to overcome the security force. This is book two and I enjoyed the intense action and the new characters added in this sequel. I also liked the plot dilemmas of trusting enemies in a combined effort and weighing attempts at negotiation rather than violence. Ms. Hinkens’ style of presentation in first person present is a bit differed but works fine once the reader adjusts. This story has an end point but includes a surprise that leaves more danger ahead. I do recommend this to readers who like dystopian with action. I received this title from the author for an honest review.

Derren is torn she doesn’t know if her brother is dead or alive and leaving him in the hands of the Sweepers is no option. The Undergrounders are divided. The only chance they have in getting rid of the Sweepers is attacking them. But they need more numbers and make alliances with unlike groups like the Rogues could be their only chance.Derren is just a teen has no experience being a leader. She is trying to do right by everyone. This sequel did not disappoint. The writing pulled me in like the last time, the pace was fast and this book was action packed, the characters are well written and come alive on page. Love the world building.I loved Trout and his loyalness. Sven is a clone, can clones fall in love? Because this one has even though he comes with a expiration date. I was kind of hoping for Sven to make a move.Jacob torn between his feelings and his believes, when push comes to shove he bails I understand where he’s coming from but wanted some more from him, to man up.I love Big Ed, he’s the best.I had some small issues with the story line:Why would Derren make a deal with the devil?? You know how it will endI was hoping for some more love building. The ending had me open my mouth, drop it on the Floor and leave it there for a couple of hours,WTF ??? Help me,need book 3 now...

This second book, Embattlement begins where Immurement left off. Derry and her team have fled Dr. Lyong and the Craniopolis, leaving her brother Owen behind with his fatal injuries. Then rumors abound that Owen may still be alive, being held against his will for experimentation. Derry knows that is she is to step into battle once again, she will need more help. Going into Shoshane City she finds a possible allegiance with the city's leader Jerome, but he too is keeping secrets. And when it comes to the Rogue's leader, the elusive and fearsome Ghost, will he help her against their common enemy, or will his own wants supersede and tear apart everything?Norma Hinkens writes an extremely compelling second novel in Embattlement. One that I truly believe is better than the first. The complex characters are believable and make for a very well rounded cast. The story is propelled forward by a thickening plot and several twists and turns. The world in which this author creates leaves you breathless in anticipation of what will happen next and the ending will make you want to dive into the next book with reckless abandonment. Overall an amazing read and rare find in a genre of overdone mediocrity.

Our story picks up immediately where Hinkens‘ first book in The Underground Series, Immurement, ended. Sixteen year old Derry Connelly is determined to return to the Craniopolis and end the evil human experimentation and cloning being forced upon captured Undergrounders. Her goal also includes finding out if her brother, Owen, is truly dead. But, she cannot go it alone. Will she persuade the Rogues to join forces with what is left of the Council? And, what will she find when she travels to Shoshane City which was destroyed in the meltdown?Hinkens’ second novel in The Underground Series, Embattlement, starts off a little slow. Once you get past the first few chapters it takes off and never stops. There is a host of new characters mixed in with the old; and, they bring a lot to the table. Derry’s character struggles with her new role as leader and balancing that with her feelings for Sven. The ending to this book really surprised me. And, that has not happened in a long time. It was one of those “Oh, sh*t!” in a bad way cliffhanger endings. I loved it! There is no way I will miss reading the next book.5 out of 5 stars.I received this book for free from the author for review consideration. This in no way affected my opinion of the book, or the content of my review.

This amazing series continues in this second book of the series! I absolutely loved the first book and I must say, my expectations were absolutely fulfilled in this sequel! Picking up right where the first book left off, I was once again immediately drawn into this awesome book. Keeping it fast-paced with even more plot twists and tons of adventure and action- I was absolutely enthralled and just could not put this book down! The storyline was fresh and unique, the characters complex and well rounded and the descriptions were intricate and spot on. The writing is just amazingly, phenomenally excellent! There was quite a surprise cliffhanger ending that has me wringing my hands awaiting the next book in this series. These books are seriously some of the best dystopian fiction I have EVER read! Phenomenal!

Derry's brother sacrificed himself to save her in Immurement. But Owen may still be alive. Derry knows she needs help to rescue him, so she goes to Shoshane City, but on the way, meets up with more trouble for her and her friends. Once more, Norma Hinkens paints a picture with her words. This is the perfect addition to a marvelous series. Good reading from beginning to end. Derry has some serious choices to make if she wants to save Owen, but she also get some unexpected help along the way. This is a marvelous, well-written story, another plus on Norma Hinkens book list.

Derry and a handful of survivors make it out of the city. They need to find Owen, but not sure if he's even alive. Lots of action going on in finding him and everyone wonders if they are even good people. Fast paced until the very end. Great writing. Received as a free book. Thanks

Post apocalyptic sci-fi!It seemed to be a bit repetitive. I liked the first book better but this one was entertaining as well. Just a bit too much running, chasing, and hostage situations over and over. Plenty of creativity in the location descriptions and character development!

Action-packed Dystopian Story!Immersive, gripping and full of adventures. Well written, with a strong female protagonist. Beefy plot that deserves delving into.
