The inauguration of President Trump; the continuing fallout of Brexit; tensions in Syria, North Korea and Afghanistan; a terror attack on Westminster; a surprise general election … It was a year in which fake news itself made the headlines, yet one in which cool, calm and perceptive analysis was more essential than ever. Here, the Bedside Guardian rounds up the best journalism of 2017, in a collection that follows the main news events of the year but is also unafraid to meander into quirkier, more offbeat waters. Showcasing the intelligent wit and thought-provoking opinions for which the paper is famous, this is essential reading for those of us attempting to make sense of a fast-changing world....

The Bedside Guardian 2017 Reviews

I was given this book by a friend. I stopped buying the Guardian more than a year ago in protest at its biased and jaundiced reporting of Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership campaign, so I’d not seen many of the articles in this 2017 compendium. While many of the opinion pieces included in The Bedside Guardian are insightful and readable, what doesn’t come across in a volume such as this is the increasing rightward drift and tone of much of the Guardian’s output. In the UK especially, the paper is on the wrong side of history and for a title with such a rich and radical history that is a real shame.

Super selection. I really enjoyed this. A good coverage of the main events of 2017 sprinkled with eclectic, witty and coruscating commentary, features and lighter pieces that summarise the essence of a memorable year.
