This manga is bordering on the progressive vs falling into the abyss. I'm not quite sure where this is going. We'll see. I'm thinking that George has some growing up to do.This was awkward, though.

Yazawa's art is just too amazing to look at. I'm mostly pulled in by all of the character's beauty. The fashion is just simply beautiful. But the characters... Each one of them is so attractive. I never get tired of looking at Isabella's beautiful and elaborate outfits. While not as dramatic as Nana so far, the second volume I feel is better than the first. Things seem to be developing more and I'm getting excited. It's a shame there's only three volumes left!

Despite some problems with the inconsistent slang between chapters (whether it's Arashi's British accent or something like "can't even" or "bon-bon"), the insensitive treatment of George's bisexuality (is it just me, or does calling it "gender-blindness" seem off? Also, Arashi saying it was nothing to be proud of made me shake my head; oh, homophobic mainstream culture of the 2000's), and George and Yukari's toxic relationship with a lot of push and pull, I find myself really liking this series. This volume was even better than the first in my eyes.I feel like Yazawa is writing this in an incredibly smart and self-aware way. Her sense of humor is great, and she likes to poke fun at the tropes she's utilizing to tell this story. I can also relate to Yukari's frustrations with wanting greater independence and just thinking for herself since her life was been entirely dictated to her. It's actually going to help with me redrafting my first novel and writing one for NaNoWriMo.Complete with beautiful and graceful art, this sophisticated but a little racy manga definitely keeps me intrigued. Now that Yukari's gotten more serious about this whole model thing, and our main colorful players have been established, I'm really curious to see how Paradise Kiss will unfold from here. George and Yukari's relationship will still be very complicated, though.

Feelings grow between Yukari and George (ish?), and Yukari realizes that she needs to have more independence in her life. After an argument with her mom in the middle of the volume, she decides to put her studies on an indefinite hiatus and run away from home. With not as much pressure on her life, maybe she'll get some more jobs out in the big bad world of modeling? This was another entertaining volume from Yazawa. Not only are the 4th wall pokes still here (I thought they would be gone after the first volume, so I didn't mention them despite thinking they were hilarious), but the content is getting all the more interesting. It may "burn out" a bit at points (like the anime did towards the middle), but this relationship drama and Yukari taking the reins is keeping me hooked. It's time for the next step when I get back to this series! And most of you probably know what I mean by that. ;)

PARADISE KISS n. 2Bene bene bene. A me il prossimo!!!

Overall Rating: A+Summary: A fashion/drama/romance Josei series created by Ai Yazawa (who is also the creator of Nana), which follows Yukari "Caroline" Hayasaka. Yukari is an attractive high schooler, but her life consists of traveling from high school to cram school to home, and back again. The manga opens with Yukari running into Arashi (a punk) and Isabella (a transvestite), who are part of a group of fashion students that call their label "Paradise Kiss". Yukari thinks they are perverts (did I mention she's a bit naïve?), and faints. When she wakes up, she's staring at a pink-haired woman named Miwako (the cute woman in lolita clothing on the cover), who explains the situation, and that they want her to be their model. She refuses, explaining that she's much too busy with school and doing important things, and that fashion students have it easy. This understandably pisses off Arashi (our spiky haired punk boy on the cover), who yells at her, and Yukari quickly leaves. Miwako runs after her and calls her "Caroline", because she doesn't know Yukari's name yet. As a result, Yukari is referred to as "Caroline" by the Paradise Kiss crew. Regardless, Caroline leaves, but drops her student id. The next day a ridiculously attractive guy named George shows up, and tells Yukari Miwako has her id (he has it). George gets her to go with him, in theory to pick up her id, to the art school Yazagaku. He then takes her to a hair and makeup artist for a makeover (this mostly consists of giving her bangs). After this stop off, they go meet up with the Paradise Kiss crew, and they put Yukari in a dress they designed, give her back her id, and convince her to be their model.I love Ai Yazawa. Nana is one of my favorite series, and I am now thoroughly addicted to "Paradise Kiss" after only one volume. I had already watched the anime, and finally got around to checking out the manga. Now I wish I had grabbed the first volume as soon as I finished the anime (or even while I was watching the anime). As with "Nana", "Paradise Kiss" has an excellent plot that really draws you in, interesting characters that develop in interesting ways (even in just the first volume), and is a lot of fun. The series is clearly intended for a slightly more mature audience (there are sex scenes, but they aren't explicit), but if you like Josei/Shōjo manga check this one out.Check out more manga and anime reviews at Hobotaku!

In this second volume, Yukari's romance with George is heating up! But when she finally tells her mother that she's going to be a model for Paradise Kiss, Yukari is warned that she can either quit...or leave her house! Will Yukari continue to be the perfect student her parents want her to be? Or will she continue following her heart and be a supermodel?I love this manga! The message of following your heart and staying true to yourself is just amazing. I love how all the characters are so different from what you normally find in shojo manga. A punk with piercings, a drag queen, a man with blue hair. It's exciting! And I think everyone can relate to what Yukari's going through. I can't wait to see what happens between Yukari and George!

Oh my god, this story is so emotionally and mentally taxing. It's taking me to a time in my own personal life I don't want to revisit. I really dislike George, he's a psychopath, I think he actually has Antisocial Personality Disorder. He manipulates and exploits other people's feelings, he lacks the ability to love or form meaningful personal relationships, he's egocentric, and that's only the beginning of what I think is seriously wrong with him... I refuse to believe that it's his way of helping Yukari. And when someone overlooks these serious character flaws, (Yukari), it has to be purely because they're sexually attracted to that person or because they feel some kind of guilt, anything else wouldn't make much sense. This relationship is destined to end is what I'm saying.

The drama unfolds. I can't help feel that George is a little bit manipulative. I enjoyed the development of Carolines character as she faces rejection from her parents and is faced with real life and is weighing all these stresses against whether or not being true to her self is worth the cost. I am glad she's opting for her self identity instead of following the tide of getting into a good school and getting good grades...that cut paste formula of life that works at the cost of your self identity. Her struggle is all too familiar. Hopes for the next volume: A little self regret about her decisions...more back story about George (He is still the flawless man of my dreams)

Main Yukari's determination to follow her heart into the world of fashion and away from the world her parents want for her (school) creates all sorts of dramatic scenes-- perfect high school drama!I'm less than thrilled with her relationship with George-- he is confusing and potentially abusive. It is also an interesting look into the pressures of Japanese life, especially for students-- this plot just would not work as well if it was set in America where independence is encouraged more. The outfits are so fun to look at-- another fine example of the appeal of the manga format, as this book would be way less fun if it was simply prose and not full of fun pictures!

I have no idea about how art school or fashion design works, but this manga definitely changed my thoughts on students going into the arts (I'm biased because I'm an engineering major and art major friends seem like they have loads of free time). Caroline's friendship with each of the characters progresses in a believable manner and she is reasonably struggling with balancing her school duties with this new "hobby" of hers. However, for the members of Parakiss this is their potential livelihood and their grade on the line.

I loved this series so much. It was unlike any manga I've ever read before. It's about a teenage girl that becomes the model for a group of fashion students. There is the in-your-face punk, the hot mysterious guy, the cross-dresser, and the super adorable girl. The drawings are beautiful and the characters are original. However, there is one big problem with Paradise Kiss and that is the sexual content. I personally don't like that sort of thing so I never finished the series.

Paradise Kiss Volume 2Manga Rating: 5 stars out 5. Story Line: 5 stars out of 5. I read the manga because I watched the anime. I wanted to see how close the anime came to the manga. This volume represented episodes 4 and 5. Characters: 5 stars out of 5. I still loved all the characters. They were just amazing as the first volume. I have to say my favorite characters has to be Miwako. She honestly is adorable. Yukari is pretty cool too. Writing Style: 5 stars out of 5.

Yukari gets in deeper with the Yazawa Arts gang, especially George, and finds herself getting farther and farther away from her old life--which worries her old crush, Tokumori, when she fails to show up for exams. This whole volume kind of makes me cringe...probably because I am a big goody-two-shoes and Yukari's behavior totally freaks me out. Yazawa's story telling is just so good though!

Excelente segundo volúmen de este manga fantástico. La verdad que es increíble la manera realista con que Ai Yazawa logra desarrollar a sus personajes con situaciones tan cercanas a sus lectores.

A little silly but fun. Also interesting that the heroine's Anglicized name & nickname are the same as mine!
