Hawaiian Tales of Heroes and Champions (Kolowalu Books) Reviews
I've been on a little kick since I saw Moana, investing the rich mythology of Polynesia that I've never been introduced to. Maui was an amazing doorway to the vast and beautiful story telling cultures of Oceania and other parts of the Pacific Ocean. So when I saw this book at the library I HAD to check it out. It's an introduction to basic myths from Hawaii and it's neat to see how some ideas from myths around the world are shared, but how each section of the world pinpoints what is so important. For these cultures it's family, community, the ocean, and coconuts! No, but seriously. The heartbeat of family and community, and honoring and caring for both, keep a lot of these stories going, and I really really enjoyed the small snippets I had of Hawaiian history and legend. The names and places all look so beautiful, too. I am sure I was sadly pronouncing them wrong in my head, but even my attempts were musical and melodic. A testament to how there is so much more beauty to a place than merely its location and scenery. This was a good foray into Hawaiian mythology that I'd suggest to anyone curious!
Lovely collection; well written. Brings me back to childhood <3
