"Also gut, mal abgesehen von sanitären Einrichtungen, der Medizin, dem Schulwesen, Wein, der öffentlichen Ordnung, der Bewässerung, Strassen, der Wasseraufbereitung und der allgemeinen Krankenkassen, was, frage ich euch, haben die Römer je für uns getan?" - "Den Frieden gebracht!"

Short, entertaining and great for beginners. Read alongside Suetonius's twelve Caesars.

Jesus, this book is boring!400 and something pages, it seems like this author is just trying to get it over with as soon as he can. Given the contrast with other for dummies book, for example Ancient Greece for Dummies, text is very dull and author just cannot find appropriate way to make this book more interesting to read, and less essayish. Yes, I know Ancient Rome lasted four times longer than Ancient Greece, but nevertheless if there is a will, there is a way. It is not that this book is hard to read, its not, but very boring to read. For beginners I recommend SPQR by Mary Beard.

this is the 4th book i read this summer it's about the time of the Romans and tells you about like important events and people, its ups and downs with a sense of humor at times. i used it for a research paper before but i didnt actually read it. This book gives youa more thorough understanding of the Romans and sometimes it could make you laugh and stuff. My favorite parts of the book is when they give you a person and tell you like all his achievements mostly in 2-3 pages most of the time. This could help out your research in school assignments but it can also be an entertaining read if you like to read about the Romans and stuff like me. This book even though it could take a while to read it will help your performance in school sometimes. I recommend this book to all people who like to read about the Romans and it's people, battles, triumphs and losses and who want to get info on a research paper for school and stuff.

I normally love these Dummy books as well as anything Roman. I did enjoy this one but i have to say that one thing that irritated me quite a bit was the author's constant...habit or need to put things like 'see chapter two' or 'for further reading see chapter 14' in paraenthesis. This was literally every other paragraph. That's what the INDEX is for!Otherwise, the quotes from real Romans were great, he did a good job describing the society and it's make up as well as being all encompassing for the huge time period that the Empire covers. Four stars

I'm fascinated about ancient Rome, and this book gave a lot of helpful information about it. It wasn't as light and humorous as most of the other Dummies books I've read. That said, it was engaging, and not easy to put 2,000 years of history into a few hundred pages.

Great read to accompany all of the Roman era stories and cinema if you just want a little better understanding of the time. Basically a synopsis of the Roman empire.

Yeah, I was a Dummy when it comes to Roman history...but not anymore! I've graduated to "barely knowledgable".
